THE SOCIETY / OUR PURPOSE
About Balthazar
About Balthazar
Balthazar Film Society brings people together in Providence to see and discuss films that deserve a life on the big screen.
We are building a small, independent home for film culture: screenings, shared trips to the cinema, and writing that carries the conversation beyond the theater.
A society of viewers
Some evenings begin with an unfamiliar film. Others begin with a favorite worth seeing again, in a room with other people. Curiosity is enough to join the conversation.
What happens here
- Screenings are programs presented by Balthazar.
- Club Events are outings to screenings presented by other cinemas. Their venues handle tickets and admission.
- The archive keeps a record of films we have seen together.
- The film journal is taking shape as a place for essays, criticism, and conversations.
The name
Balthazar takes its name from Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar. Our flower-crowned donkey keeps us company here.
